I am a member of the International Society of Appraisers, the world's largest organization of trained, personal property appraisers. For many years my wife and I were the owners of an antiques business in a local antiques mall.
I graduated from Greenwood (MS) High School. I received the Bachelor of Music degree from Oklahoma Baptist University and the Master of Church Music degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. I served as full time Minister Music in Baptist churches until I retired in 1991 from Ruhama Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL. I served as Minister of Music at First United Methodist Church in Bessemer, AL, from 1992 until retirement March, 2010.
I passed the required courses to become a member of the International Society of Appraisers in 1992 and started Birmingham Appraisal Services.
I completed the required program and testing and was granted the highest designation of CAPP in 1999. This is the Certified Appraiser of Personal Property designation in the area of Antiques and Residential Contents. I held this certification until 2014 when I opted not to requalify, although I still appraise using the same techniques and guidelines. My expertise is in furniture, glass, ceramics, silver, and other decorative arts.
I have been quite active in the International Society of Appraisers speaking at several of the conferences and serving as an officer. For three years I was Chair of the Electronics Information Services Committee and for two years Chair of the Antiques and Residential Division. I have received a number of awards from the organization including the Service Award (2002 and 2004) and the Distinguished Service Award (2001 and 2004). I completed the requirement and testing for re-qualification as a CAPP in 2005.
For 12 years I taught antiques for the Continuing Education Department of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. After the closing of the department I taught the course at Bessemer Technical College, Bessemer, AL, Walker College, Jasper, AL, as well as at other schools and organizations. I speak about antiques often for social, church and civic organizations.
I founded Birmingham Appraisal Services in 1992 to provide legal appraisals of personal property in the specialized area of antiques and residential contents. I do not appraise real estate.
Through our commitment, knowledge, experience and training, Birmingham Appraisal Services has established a business relationship with our clients that will last a lifetime!
